Baptism and Confirmation at St. John's Lafayette

Baptism

The Prayer Book requires that parents and sponsors be instructed “in the meaning of Baptism, in their duties to help the new Christians grow in the knowledge and love of God, and in their responsibilities as members of his Church.” At St. John’s we normally do this in a single session of approximately 90 minutes at a date prior to the scheduled baptism. While out-of-town sponsors (godparents) may not be able to attend that session, they should receive this instruction in their own church community.

Confirmation

It is the normal practice in this diocese to administer Confirmation at regional services during the Easter season. In addition, our bishop is reluctant to confirm children under age 16.

We use a confirmation curriculum for our regular youth group meetings, thus providing confirmation preparation on an on-going basis. When the young person feels ready to make an adult commitment in confirmation, she or he may speak with the clergy to make such arrangements.

For adults, a series of classes for newcomers and those seeking baptism or confirmation take place throughout the year. Click HERE for more information.
